Scopes of Work:

  1. Energy Audit
  2. Stakeholder Engagement
  3. Energy Efficiency Treasure Hunt - coordination, facilitation, data collection, modeling, report

Schedule: 2020 - 2021

Summary:

Already a model for sustainability, but seeking to further its sustainability vision, the Sun Valley Community School (SVCS) set the ambitious student-led goal of carbon neutrality by 2025. Through a carbon footprint study,  students found that the three main sources of the school’s greenhouse gas emissions were  transportation, electricity and heat. Students identified that more research was needed regarding energy consumption at the School, as well as more education on the importance of saving energy.

WSC supported the school in 2020 by facilitating a school-wide Energy Treasure Hunt. The two-day energy audit and energy savings analysis engaged the following teams of students, teachers, facility managers with an expert energy auditor:

  1. Energy Efficiency Team
  2. HVAC  and Equipment Team
  3. Water Team
  4. Lighting & Solar Team

Teams toured all of the school’s facilities, took photos and measurements, and documented equipment, specifications, and observations. Students were then supported by experts to run calculations and develop reports. Students culminated the project with a presentation to leadership showing the process of the Energy Treasure Hunt and findings.

The Treasure Hunt gave SVCS a clear roadmap of projects to implement immediately and in the short, medium and long-term to continue on their mission toward carbon neutrality.
